On the ocassion of his 51th birthday, let us recount the key events which led to the making of the great Bollywood Badshah as we know him today.
Shah Rukh Khan grew up in a middle class family in Delhi, but he received a very good quality education from St. Columba’s School where he received the Sword of Honour. His interest in Hindi films first started when his mother took him to a Hindi movie as a reward for getting full marks in Hindi. He also started studying for Master in Mass Comm at Jamia Millia Islamia, but left to pursue a career in acting. He also attended National School of Drama.
King Khan’s initial starring roles in tv series like Dil Dariya, Fauzi, Circus earned him positive critical appreciation where he was even compared to Dilip Kumar, but at that time he was not interested in acting in films, thinking he is not good enough. He decided to act in films as a way to escape the grief of his mother’s passing.
SRK moved to Mumbai with 1000 rupees in his pocket (gift from his mother) in search for estranged lover Gauri Chivver. After that, SRK was quickly offered the film Deewana, where he played alongside Rishi Kapoor and Divya Bharti. Not only the film was a box office hit, but Khan also received the Filmfare Best Male Debut Award for his performance. Thus his Bollywood career began.
His initial characters as male lead in films like Chamatkar, Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, exuded unique enthusiasm and energy, but then came movies like Baazigar and Darr where his negative roles earned him one filmfare award and one nomination. He was certainly becoming a very versatile actor.
After that came his romantic roles in films like Karan Arjun and Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, which became the longest running movie in history of Indian Cinema. After a slow year or two came Dil Toh Pagal Hain and Kuch Kuch Hota Hain, which propelled SRK to the top of Bollywood. After that SRK produced a superhit every year starting from Mohabbatein in 2000 to Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna in 2006. This period should be termed as the height of his career.
A couple of SRK’s most memorable later roles was in Chak De India and My Name is Khan, which demonstrated how mature he has become as an actor. The later made him an international name.
But SRK was not only a movie star. He has produced three films, hosted one season of Kaun Banega Crorepati, and owns an IPL team. He is a brilliant businessman which makes him one of the highest earning actors in the world.
King Khan has become an ever present celebrity and is more popular than even Tom Cruise. We wish him a very happy birthday and more success in the coming years.
